Ping Test: Live Latency and Jitter
See your ping to Cloudflare, Google and cloud servers in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Singapore, one request per second, on a live graph. The table shows latency, jitter and failed requests for each server while it runs.
Ping test tool
- Press Start ping test. Each ticked server gets one small request per second.
- To change the servers or add one address of your own, use the list below the button before you start.
- Watch the graph and the table. Press Stop when you have enough; it stops by itself after 10 minutes.
Ready. Nothing is sent until you press Start.
A full https:// address of a website or server. It asks only for the headers (a HEAD request), not the page itself, so it uses almost no data. Many sites answer slowly on purpose, so use it to compare, not as a verdict.
The graph shows the last 2 minutes. Each line is one server; a gap with a red tick under it is a failed request. The table below has the same data as text.
| Server | Last | Min | Median | p95 | Max | Jitter | Failed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
| – | – | – | – | – | – | – | |
| AWS Mumbai | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
| AWS Hyderabad | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
| AWS Singapore | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
| Your address | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
After you press Stop, a short written summary of every server appears here.
Real ICMP ping from a probe on your network (optional)
A browser cannot send real ping packets, so this runs the ping command (16 packets) on a Globalping volunteer probe on your internet provider's network, the same ASN as yours when one is online. The result shows which probe ran it. The host you type and the result are public on Globalping, and each run uses one of the 250 free tests per hour your IP address gets.
A public domain name or IP address, like google.com or 8.8.8.8.
Not run yet.
- Average–probe to host
- Min / max–fastest and slowest reply
- Packet loss Real ICMP packets that got no reply, counted by the probe. It describes the probe's path to the host, not your own line. –of 16 packets
How to read your result
Start with the median, the typical ping to that server. If p95 is more than double the median, you get regular lag spikes even when the average looks fine. Jitter shows how smooth the connection is from one second to the next.
The bands below are our thresholds, the same ones our speed test uses for its gaming and video call ratings. Apply them to the nearest server, usually Cloudflare or AWS Mumbai.
| Use | Great | Good | Fair | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gaming: ping | under 30 ms | 30–59 ms | 60–99 ms | 100 ms or more |
| Gaming: jitter | under 5 ms | 5–9 ms | 10–19 ms | 20 ms or more |
| Video calls: ping | under 50 ms | 50–99 ms | 100–149 ms | 150 ms or more |
| Video calls: jitter | under 10 ms | 10–19 ms | 20–29 ms | 30 ms or more |
Failed requests should stay at or near 0%. If every server fails at the same moment, your connection dropped; if only one server fails, the problem is at that server or on the route to it.
Why your ping is high or jumps
- Distance. From India, Singapore always answers slower than Mumbai. Compare servers with each other, not your number with someone else's.
- Wi-Fi. Walls and neighbours' networks add delay and jitter. Test once on a LAN cable; if the spikes vanish, the cause is your Wi-Fi, and a room-by-room Wi-Fi test finds the weak spots.
- A busy line. If ping jumps only while someone downloads or uploads, your router is queuing too much data (bufferbloat). Measure your ping under load to see how much it rises.
- The route. When one server is slow and the rest are fine, run a traceroute to see where the delay starts.
If calls cut out or voices sound robotic, jitter or packet loss is the usual cause, as the Microsoft Teams network guide notes. Problems that come and go over hours are easier to prove with the internet stability test.
Browser ping vs the ping command
Browsers cannot send real ping (ICMP) packets, so this page times small HTTPS requests instead. The result is usually a few milliseconds higher than ping in a terminal, because a web server has to read and answer each request.
So use the numbers here to compare: one server against another, Wi-Fi against cable, morning against evening. For real ICMP numbers, use the probe option in the tool. It runs from a volunteer probe on a network like yours, not from your device.
Run ping yourself on Windows, Mac and Linux
On Windows, open Command Prompt and type ping -t 8.8.8.8 to ping without stopping. Press Ctrl+C to stop, or Ctrl+Break to see the totals and carry on. Without -t, Windows sends 4 pings. See Microsoft's ping command reference.
On a Mac or Linux, open Terminal and type ping -c 20 8.8.8.8. Without -c it runs until you press Ctrl+C, then prints the loss and the min/avg/max times. The last number Linux prints, mdev, shows how much the ping varies, much like our jitter figure (see the Linux ping manual).
What the ping messages mean
"Request timed out" means no reply came back within 4 seconds, the Windows default. One or two now and then is not a problem. Many in a row mean the line dropped, or the other end may ignore ping.
"Destination host unreachable" means a router, often your own router or PC, reported that it has no way to reach that address. Check that you are connected, then restart the router. The message is defined in the ICMP standard, RFC 792.
How this test works
When you press Start, your browser sends one small HTTPS request per second to each server you ticked and times the answer. The first request to each server opens the connection and is not counted. A request with no answer within 4 seconds counts as failed, and the test stops after 10 minutes.
For Cloudflare the timing is precise: the browser's own timing data, minus the processing time Cloudflare reports. The other servers do not share that data, so their times include a little browser and server overhead.
In our test on , one minute with all five servers made about 300 requests and moved roughly 0.3 MB in both directions, so even a full 10-minute run stays around 3 MB of mobile data. An address of your own is asked only for its headers (a HEAD request), never the full page, so it adds very little.
Everything in the graph and table is HTTP round-trip time, not ICMP ping, and a failed request is not the same as a lost packet. The optional ICMP ping runs on a Globalping volunteer probe, named in the result, not on your device. Results stay in this tab; nothing is saved or sent to us. Read the full method and list of servers.
Questions about the ping test
Can I run a ping test on my phone?
Yes. This page works in any mobile browser, on Wi-Fi or mobile data, and most phones have no ping command of their own. Run it on Wi-Fi and on mobile data to see which is steadier.
How do I check my ping to Mumbai?
Keep AWS Mumbai ticked and press Start. It is an Amazon cloud data centre in Mumbai (region ap-south-1), so its median shows how fast your connection reaches Mumbai. To compare many regions in India and Asia at once, use the gaming ping test by region.
Are failed requests the same as packet loss?
No. A failed request is an HTTPS request that got no answer within 4 seconds. A lost packet inside a web request is usually sent again, so it shows up as a spike rather than a failure. The ICMP option on this page reports real packet loss, measured by the probe.
How long should I run a continuous ping test?
One or two minutes is enough to see your normal ping and jitter. If lag comes at certain times, run the test while it happens; it stops by itself after 10 minutes. To monitor your connection for hours, use the stability test instead.
